In case you were at all interested we have had a pretty thorough though evolving garden plan for the yard from the get go. This is the current incarnation, though it hasn't change all that much in the 4 years we have been working. mostly filling in around the big ticket items, and updating specific plants etc. Maybe someday I'll get a cool Ajax/web 2.0 mouse over map that shows you pictures and stuff, but that is for later; after Jordan maybe!
You can see the [[Veggie Garden]] in the plan above; It is the x shaped sqaure at the bottom, center towards the right. We put it in in spring, 2008.

Next we, [[Jenny]] and [[Josh|I]], trucked in 3 cubic yards of dirt.
The last bit was to install plastic in the pathways and dump 1/2 cubic yards of pea gravel on it. The pea gravel was brought in via [[http://paulandangelasfamily.blogspot.com/ Paul Jenkin's]] Truck! Thanks Paul. Also want to thank my parents, they bought the holley hedge as 1 gallon plants 2 or 3 years ago, so that we have that nice solid hedge now.

8/23/2005

"There is no way from one person to another however loving and sympathetic we try to be, however sound our psychology, however frank and open our behavior, we cannot penetrate the incognito of the other man, for there are no direct relationships, not even between soul and soul. Christ stands between us, and we can only get into touch with our neighbors through him. That is why intercession is the most promising way to reach our neighbors and corporate prayer offered in the name of Christ, the purest form of fellowship." (Bonhoeffer, p99 'The Cost of Discipleship')

This passage is explaining the role of Christ as the mediator, not only between God and men, but men and men. See Mark 10:28-32

In order to be separate from the world, we must be individuals, as called by Christ. However once we have accepted the call, we are in fellowship with others called by Christ, The Church. Note this is not a church not a denomination, but the Universal Church, the Body of Christ.

It is a separation from all we have known, the old passing away and the new taking shape under Jesus forming command.

How often do we try and connect with our neighbors via intercessory prayer? Our Spouses? Our Friends? Family? As Christians this should be our Number 2 priority behind our Prayer fellowship with Christ.

9/07/2005

" Earthly possessions dazzle our eye and delude us into thinking that they can provide security and freedom from anxiety. Yet all the time they are the very source of all anxiety. If our hearts are set on them, our reward is an anxiety whose burden is intolerable " (Bonhoeffer, p178 'The Cost of Discipleship')

This passage is a paraphrase of sorts of 'Mathew 6:25-34' Bonhoeffer goes on to discuss the mentioned birds and lilies; and how we should be dependant on God for everything. While understanding the general idea, I don't understand the exact intent, from nature there are many animals who don't have this direct dependence, take for example the squirrel who knows to burry the nuts in the summer and fall so he can eat when they are non existent in the winter , or the bear which must eat to go into hibernation. In both of these cases God has designed the creature to act in the interest of the future. God has clearly designed man with the ability to think about the future, why then would Christ expect all of that to be thrown to the wind? In Genesis 41, Joseph is clearly commanded to store up grain for a coming famine. So When then is it right for us to use God given gifts of intelligence, and common sense To provide for ourselves, and when should we rely on God's providence? To take this to ridiculous extremes, The Israelites got the manna from Heaven, and yet they still had to GO collect it They didn't say well you know God can do anything, so he will float it on into my mouth... So what then is the dilemma? Is this just sophist argument to avoid obedience to Christ? How do we distinguish common sense, rationalization, prudence, and obedience? Is my 401k Disobedience? Prudence?, Common Sense? Collecting the Manna from heaven? I certainly have a great rational behind it; does that really mean anything though?

God is so great, omniscient, omnipotent, and I am so small, and know so little Even such simple commands are hard for me to grasp.

If you've ever been asked to write down a priority list in a small group, your list probably looked something this

1. God
2. Wife/Family
3. Church
4. Work

Last night, I was thinking what does this really mean? to put God first? when have I put God first, over my wife? While there are a million ways you can put God first; obviously those of us here this morning have taken the first step on that journey, Showing up at 5:45 AM to pray. So now in conjunction with Church and Small Group you are up to ~5 hours, that's almost 1/2 of a 10% tithe of time!

Yet, the real message I want to get to in terms of putting God as a priority ties deeply into Jim's email from this past week; the Full Armor of God. If God were really a priority, The our armor would be out, polished to spit shine, all ready to go; instead I fear to often is is rusting away in the mildew of our basements.

I want to tackle this issue head on; what does it mean to prepare for God, and show up in the whole armor of God? To do this, lets first talk about the reason its necessary!

Satan is like a Roaring Lion seeking to devour us(1 Peter 5:8). Everyday we are out there, battling him whether we are aware of it or not. So what tools does Satan use to attack us? our past behavior, and current circumstances. Lets look at a typical scenario, You or I are watching TV, and an attractive lady comes on a commercial, seductively advertising... perfume. What is our reaction? What should or reaction be? If your breastplate of righteousness is firmly attached, you may not have really had the TV on, or you may have immediately turned away. You may have turned away, and pulled out your sword of the spirit, and told the Devil to leave, for the Lord our God has said "The marriage bed shall be kept pure" (Hebrews 13:4) Any of you who have experienced this, or seen real armed combat knows that one stroke isn't going to end anything, so the father of deception comes right back at you, he may even use Gods word, pointing out Mathew 5:28, But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. This is where the Shield of faith is essential, with the shield of faith, we know that we are forgiven, and made clean by Christ, not anything of our own doing. The devil may again swing at us with past behavior, telling use how horrible we were to look at women in the past, and yet we can continue with the shield raised high blocking the blows of the evil one. We might hopefully finish the encounter off with a remembrance of Revelation 20:10, "10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever."

So my question to you is, how sharp are your swords, how ready is your plate mail, how high are you holding your shield. I encourage each and everyone of you to make it a priority this week to look at your life and ask, where is Satan attacking, and what swords do you have ready to take him down with? If you are at all like me, you will be embarrassed by how shoddy your armory is, I challenge you to flip through your bibles, concordances etc and find some choice swords that you can use in your specific battles. I'd love to see what weapons you find, If you'd be so kind to share them with the email list! because, all sins are common to man, and I'm sure many of us are dealing with the same issues you may be.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it

3/16/2007

Last night while up late working on a church promo video; my wife stumbled into my study saying someone was ringing the doorbell. It was about 11:30 at night, and a hundred thoughts went through my head; the first of which was I should probably put on a shirt!!

I walk with my wife back to the bedroom and grab the top shirt in my drawer, interestingly enough a "Satan is a dork" t-shirt; then I walk down the stairs, and sure enough I hear the doorbell; ding dong, ding dong; my first thought is ahhh they are going to wake the baby. My second thoughts are who is this crazy lunatic ringing my door at nearly midnight! I sneak down into our dining room and peer out the bay window, and there on the porch is a young woman; apparently all by herself. I look around I can't see any sign of a vehicle, or other people, so I go back and talk with Jenny. She is needless to say scared; and worried for the safety of herself and Jordan; as am I. Ultimately I go back down to the dining room, turn on the lights, and open the window so I can chat.

It turns out that this woman had a fight with her boyfriend, who left her at the side of the road, and took off with her car. All she wants is to borrow a phone. At this point with another quick glance to make sure there is no one else around, I open the door; and invite her in. I hand her the phone, she calls someone, probably a parent; and asks for a ride. As we talk before she leaves the young woman said "I saw your light on, so I came and knocked"

Thinking about that this morning, it blew me away. "I saw your light on, so I came and knocked" Jesus calls us to be the light of the world. If I hadn't been working late on a video promo for church, I wouldn't have had this opportunity to help; there would have been no light on. It would have been dark.

Luke 8:16 (NIV)
16 "No one lights a lamp and hides it in a jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, he puts it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.

Matthew 5:6
6 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Every day Jesus calls on us; how do we answer him. I honestly didn't feel powerful; I was afraid, for my family, for what might happen, was this someone wanting to size up the house to come back and steal stuff? hurt my family? I didn't know. I do know what God has called us to do though. As we have recently talked about a lot at church:

Matthew 6:19-22
19"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22"The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will be full of light. 23But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

What good is it if I accumulate things, but because of those things I become afraid and extinguish my light. So though afraid, we still need to light the light, and fight the good fight; even if we need to "do it afraid"

City on a Hill
