==Week 14==

Sorry this is late. Hope you are all having a wonderful week. Here are the activities that we enjoyed this past Friday.

Geography

We studied Africa and it's map points. We used dry erase
markers to mark or traced the geographical features for the week. We
repeated the points several times both tracing and saying the names.

History

We listened to the memory work on the CD and then split into group of four. Each group took a turn pretending to be Zimbabweans working as stone craftsmen building a wall (using cardboard buildings blocks). The teams raced to build their wall before the History sentence was completed on the CD.

Science

I brought in several samples of each type of rock this week. The girls were able to pass them around and talk about the different features the they saw between the three types. Their favorite seemed to be a rose quartz! Then we practiced a song to help us remember the three types of rocks. I couldn't help but set the memory work to We Will Rock You!

Timeline

We continued to learn a simplified version of the hand motions for each
card. Due to copyright laws the videos I had linked for you on You Tube
for the the hand motions are no longer public access. You can still
link to the videos if you are a member of CC connected. Simply log on
and under the at home sharing tab select timeline and search under
"rafikipaka". When you click on her upload you can open her document
that has links to the different hand motions for each week through a
protected area of You Tube. These are still the official motions set
forth by Classical Conversations for the new timeline. These are the
motions that I use a version of in the classroom as well.

Latin

Latin was the same as last week. Love how the girls have mastered this!

Fine Arts

We studied Ghiberti this week. We discussed his background and works and then worked on fashioning our own creations. We drew simple designs on cardboard squares and then rolled out clay to place on the cardboard over our drawings. Next, we covered the whole thing in aluminum foil and pressed around the design. We painted the top in black paint and let them dry. Once dry we use scrubby pads to rub the paint off of the tops of our designs creating creating our "bronze doors" just as Ghiberti created his masterpieces.

Experiment

We discussed ho scientists can use core samples to study our earth (honestly they use it outside the realm of our earth as well). We used layered clay and straws to extract our own core samples. We will be switching out one of this weeks science experiments with next weeks on Friday.

That's all for this week. Please reach out with any questions!
==Week 14==

Sorry this is late. Hope you are all having a wonderful.

Sorry this is late. Hope you are all having a wonderful.

I introduced the girls to the Math Pokey this week. This was as simple as it sounds. We sung our linear measurements to the Hokey Pokey and had a fun time being goofy at the same time!

Josh: /* Crazy Week Done!? */

==Crazy Week Done!?==
So the last week has been INSANE! Literaly... So in no particular order, we started with a natural disaster bifecta for our daughter, an earthquake on her birthday, and a hurricaine on her birthday party! Yes, so a birthday and party was in the works for this week. See birthday Pictures
Here

It was also her first day of homeschool, so everything that entailed getting setup! Curriculum, Furniture, lesson plans etc!. We also had her first day of Home school co-op!

We also had a consignment sale, which thank God, despite the hurricane actually sold about 90% of our stuff! God is great! Guess we should call it a hurricane sale! so that involved Tagging, and dropping stuff off during the week.

And too top it all off, we added a new family member, Arwen, our new 4 Month old chocolate lab puppy! Sam is adjusting ok so far, right now they are 'aware' of each other, but not being lovely or anything, we'll see if thats how it stays, or if they get more friendly! Anyway we THINK she is going to be sam sized; so another medum size dog; She has the cutest webbed feet; Labs are pretty cool dogs, its no suprise that they are such long running favorites; and they do so well with children too!

Right now she is curled up next to my feet. We are wondering how long the honeymoon period is going to last; so far she is a gentle, not to frisky puppy; who seems perfectly tempered for our household!

==Crazy Week Done!?==
So the last week has been INSANE! Literaly... So in no particular order, we started with a natural disaster bifecta for our daughter, an earthquake on her birthday, and a hurricaine on her birthday party! Yes, so a birthday and party was in the works for this week.

So we got the table finished! just in time. The funny thing about the pedestal and legs is that I ended up making it to narrow so I couldn't get my hands in to screw on the retaining nuts onto the bolts coming off the legs, so Jordan ended up having to assemble the legs for me...! I couldn't believe she was able to stick her arm up the shoulder into the pedestal, put washer on, and screw on all 8 bolts! She is becoming such a great helper! I am very proud of her.
So The school year starts next Monday! Jordan is entering Kindergarten as a home-school student! We are so excited. As part of the parlor makeover as our one room school house, We needed a new table for all the work they will be doing. To that end I am building one. Tonight I finished turning the pedestal on the mini lathe w/ extension!
This afternoon, I noticed that my [http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1160/ Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart'] has poked up, it seems like this is later than normal, so I thought perhaps we were finally experiencing its zone8+ness but after the last two winters, I feel quite safe in saying this thing is definitely hardy in our 7b climate here in Raleigh NC.

The heavy winds accompanying the massive swarm of tornadoes cracked off 2 of the 5 PVC pipes in the rose tree structure. I am sad, and will have to cut it way back in order to effect whatever fixes I end up deeming necessary. fortunately the main tornadoes missed us; we just got "normal" high straight line winds.
So today we got the bald spots on the front corner covered with dirt and hay. We de-weed'd the whole area under the bench swing, and got all the open areas sprayed down with weed killer. I think we will get the water turned on 2 weeks from now or so... happy birthday!

Most of the Hostas are poking out pretty significantly, and this frost 4 or 5 days ago, may have finally done in the male kiwi, they are looking really really bad! :( The female got hit hard too, but its enough established that it won't be tooo bad.
So Spring is again here, and it feels so hopeless, there is so much to do, and not anywhere near enough time. The Brafords just had their flowering over the last couple weeks, and many other things are starting to look great.
Current Todo list:
*Fix Landscape timbers in front stair area
*Repaint front porch
*Cut Down Rain Trees
**Plant replacements
*Clear out garden 1/2 done
**Get new soil; possibly new arrangement?
*Plant Garden
*New Red Mulch in the front bed (phlox area)
*XSpring trim on some plants
**XKiwi
**Xhellebore
*Weeds
**Esp front Junper bed
**More Weeds
*XWeed Spray
**Spray more!
*Turn on Water
*XMow Weeds
*New Black Mulch in some beds
This past week has seen the emergence of 3/8 of our Elephant Ears. All black runners. The Blue Hawaian, and the Diamond Back still have yet to emerge. The red Cana Lili in the front are both well back sporting at least 3 leaf sets each. The P. Nigra shot well this year, but so far I had only one aborted shoot on the P. Vivax; not sure whats going on there :( Many of my main culms are now going on 4 years and will likely have to be removed next year.

*XMow Weeds
This past week has seen the emergence of 3/8 of our Elephant Ears. All black runners. The Blue Hawaian, and the Diamond Back still have yet to emerge. The red Cana Lili in the front are both well back sporting at least 3 leaf sets each. The P. Nigra shot well this year, but so far I had only one aborted shoot on the P. Vivax; not sure whats going on there :( Many of my main culms are now going on 4 years and will likely have to be removed next year.

This afternoon, I noticed that my http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1160/ Tradescantia pallida 'Purple Heart'] has poked up, it seems like this is later than normal, so I thought perhaps we were finally experiencing its zone8+ness but after the last two winters, I feel quite safe in saying this thing is definitely hardy in our 7b climate here in Raleigh NC.

==2010 Spring Recap==
So the Fairy hut is done, I ended up with 2 dragon lady cross vines, and a Major Wheeler Honeysuckly. WE put some concrete stepping stones down underneath, and the wood is sprouting willow leaves, I wonder if the main supports will take root!?

We had a great camping trip... If by great you mean having some tents blown apart, and Jordan not sleeping at all the entire night. In fact, not only did she not sleep, but she talked the whole night too.... Jordan doing hand shadows in front of her night light: "Look dad, its my hand!!! ..... Look dad, its my foot!!!!" Repeat about 200 times and you understand my night. By the end of it I was thinking, look Jordan, its my hands around your neck... Fortunately we all made it out alive, and we now have a family camping trip under our belt. Still letting the experience settle; will see if we choose to do it again! Will post some pictures at some point in the near future.
So despite epic cold, long lasting sickness and other brutal realitites of life, we have persevered, and completed our winter project for the year, a beautiful set of Built-in Bookshelves around our fire place in the family room.

While In a technical sense, the crib was probably a bit harder and fancier, this took more time, and had a bit more complexity. Definitely had a lot more wood, and in some ways tighter tolerances.

Without Further ado, here are a couple pictures:

This one is for dad, you can see the Michael Wheland Pern artwork on the TV if you look close!
Last but not least a couple in progress shots:
